When news broke that more than 1,300 Voice of America (VOA) employees were placed on leave and funding was terminated for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and Radio Free Asia (RFA), a lot of folks immediately hit the panic button. Headlines started screaming about “censorship” and “authoritarianism,” but let’s take a breath and actually break down what’s going on here.

Promoting Freedom: A Noble Mission

First and foremost, let’s make something abundantly clear: I fully support the idea of promoting freedom and democracy, especially in places where tyranny and oppression are the norm. Countries like Iran, North Korea, Russia, and China are ruled by regimes that crush dissent and systematically lie to their own people. Broadcasting truth and hope to those living under the boot of authoritarianism is not just noble — it’s essential.

That’s why organizations like VOA, RFE/RL, and RFA have been valuable tools in America’s diplomatic and ideological arsenal. During the Cold War, Radio Free Europe became a lifeline of truth behind the Iron Curtain, offering reliable news to people trapped under Soviet propaganda. Similarly, RFA challenges the iron grip of the Chinese Communist Party and North Korea’s regime by shining a light on the truth they so desperately want to bury.

But just because something is noble in concept doesn’t mean it’s flawless in execution. The fact is, Voice of America has had serious credibility issues for years, and when credibility falters, so does effectiveness. That’s why the recent executive order signed by Trump makes sense — not as a dismantling of VOA but as a necessary course correction.

What Did Trump Actually Do?

The executive order signed by Trump directed the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) — VOA’s parent agency — to reduce its operations to the minimum mandated by statutes. In plain English, he didn’t “gut” or “destroy” VOA, despite what some critics would have you believe. Instead, he aimed to trim down unnecessary bureaucracy and put an end to practices that weren’t serving the original mission.

The move also cut grants to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Radio Free Asia — two outlets that broadcast into some of the most controlled and oppressed nations on Earth. Now, I’m not thrilled about that, and I think there’s room to debate whether reducing funding to those services was the right call. After all, Russia and China aren’t exactly softening their stance on disinformation and propaganda. But the problem here isn’t just about funding; it’s about whether these outlets are living up to their mission.

The Real Issue: Bias and Partisanship

One of the primary reasons for cutting back VOA’s operations was the perceived and often blatant bias in its reporting. Some Republicans have called for the organization to be completely shuttered, arguing that VOA has morphed into a government-funded version of a left-leaning media outlet rather than a truly unbiased voice of American values.

To be fair, they’re not just imagining things. There have been multiple instances where VOA’s coverage leaned suspiciously far to the left. One notorious example was its handling of China’s COVID-19 response, where it seemed to parrot Chinese propaganda by praising their “success” while downplaying the brutal lockdown measures and silencing of whistleblowers. That’s not just irresponsible journalism — it’s a betrayal of what VOA is supposed to stand for.

James Robbins of the New York Post put it well when he wrote, “Voice of America is a well-established brand that should not be discarded — but it needs top-to-bottom reform.” I couldn’t agree more. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the concept of VOA, but there’s a whole lot wrong with how it’s been operating lately.

The Dangers of Propaganda at Home and Abroad

Let’s be clear: we’re not just battling foreign propaganda — we’re also battling the erosion of truth at home. If the Voice of America becomes an echo chamber of partisan rhetoric, then we’ve lost a critical tool in our fight against hostile regimes that manipulate the truth daily.

In a world where Russia and China are aggressively pushing disinformation, the last thing we need is for VOA to become just another talking head for partisan politics. When the Chinese Communist Party is flooding the internet with lies, or when Russian state media is spinning narratives to destabilize the West, America’s voice needs to stand out as clear, honest, and unbiased. Anything less is a disservice not only to the people we’re trying to reach overseas but also to the American taxpayers who are funding it.

Reform Is Not the Enemy — Stagnation Is

Critics are quick to label Trump’s move as anti-democratic or authoritarian, but that’s just political noise. The truth is that reform doesn’t mean destruction. Reform means taking a hard look at what’s not working, cutting the fat, and building something stronger and more efficient in its place. And, quite frankly, if VOA has become more of a mouthpiece for one political ideology than a representative of American principles, it’s time to fix that.

Instead of throwing out the baby with the bathwater, we should be asking ourselves:

  • Are we efficiently using taxpayer dollars to support freedom and democracy abroad?
  • Is the messaging truly unbiased, or are we inadvertently undermining our credibility by injecting partisan perspectives?
  • Are the voices we’re broadcasting genuinely representative of American values — or just the values of one political faction?

A Call for Balance

There’s nothing wrong with having an agency dedicated to promoting democracy and countering propaganda from authoritarian states. In fact, it’s a critical part of our foreign policy toolkit. But we can’t afford to let political agendas hijack the message. Cutting back on bloated, ineffective operations isn’t an attack on freedom — it’s a practical step to ensure that our message remains clear and credible.

The world needs to hear the truth about American principles and values — not a politicized version of them. If reforming VOA means scaling back and recalibrating to make it more honest and balanced, then so be it. I’m all for that. Let’s make sure the Voice of America is truly the voice of the American people — diverse, principled, and unwavering in its commitment to freedom.
