Well, well, well—every once in a blue moon, something happens in Washington that reminds me the Lord does indeed work in mysterious ways. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester, a Democrat from my liberal-dominated state of Delaware, with whom I almost never agree, has decided to vote against Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nomination to head the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Now, make no mistake—I have no illusions that Rochester and I are on the same page here. In fact, I’d wager my life that we arrived at this decision for entirely different reasons. She’s concerned that Kennedy isn’t equipped to handle issues like maternal mortality and general health policy. Fair enough. But if there’s one glaring, non-negotiable reason why no Christian conservative should want Kennedy anywhere near HHS, it’s his long and loud record of staunch support for abortion.
A Kennedy in Charge of Health and Human Services?
The Secretary of HHS has a massive role in shaping the direction of America’s healthcare system. This person oversees policies affecting everything from Medicare to public health initiatives, drug regulation, and, yes—abortion funding and policy. And let’s be honest: Kennedy may have broken from the Democratic Party on a number of issues, but abortion ain’t one of them.
This is a man who has repeatedly aligned himself with the pro-abortion movement. He has attacked pro-life laws, defended radical abortion-on-demand policies, and even pushed back against commonsense restrictions that protect unborn babies in the womb. If there’s one thing we don’t need, it’s a health secretary who sees the slaughter of innocent children as “healthcare.”
If Kennedy were sitting across from me right now, I’d open my Bible to Psalm 139:13-14 and read aloud: “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Every single unborn child is made in the image of God—something that RFK Jr. and his ideological allies have seemingly forgotten.
The Left’s Opposition to Kennedy: A Case of Selective Outrage
Now, while I’m glad Blunt Rochester is voting against Kennedy, I can’t help but shake my head at the reasoning she and her fellow Democrats are using. They’re not concerned about his radical pro-abortion stance. Oh no! Their issue with him is that they find him unqualified on technical policy matters.
Look, I’m all for qualifications. If someone’s running HHS, they should know the ins and outs of public health. But let’s be real here—Democrats loved Xavier Becerra, Biden’s HHS Secretary, even though he had exactly zero experience in public health before taking the job. What did he have? A firm commitment to advancing the left’s radical abortion agenda. Funny how that works.
So the fact that they’re suddenly so concerned about qualifications tells me this is more about political optics than it is about making sure Americans get competent leadership. They don’t like RFK Jr. because he’s been a thorn in the Democratic establishment’s side. He’s questioned Big Pharma, gone off-script on issues like free speech, and dared to have an independent thought here and there. That’s the real reason they want to torpedo his nomination.
Two Different Roads to the Same Conclusion
I suppose this is one of those rare moments where people with wildly different worldviews can agree on an outcome, even if we got there by two very different paths. Lisa Blunt Rochester and I both oppose Kennedy’s confirmation, but for entirely different reasons.
She sees him as incompetent. I see him as dangerous.
She thinks he won’t push the left’s policy agenda hard enough. I think he’d push it in exactly the wrong direction—especially when it comes to abortion.
At the end of the day, I don’t care what finally sinks Kennedy’s nomination. I just care that it does, in fact, sink. Because we need someone running HHS who values all human life, born and unborn. And as far as I’m concerned, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fails that test completely.
So, for the first time in a long time, I say this with sincerity: Senator Blunt Rochester, you made the right call.
