With President Joe Biden’s term drawing to a close, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the highs and lows of his presidency. As an independent Christian conservative, I believe in fairness: commending the good, critiquing the bad, and learning from both. After all, Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” So, let’s dive in.
The Good
While my worldview often diverges from Biden’s policies, there’s merit in recognizing his notable accomplishments. Even amidst political differences, these achievements show that good governance can transcend partisan boundaries.
- Infrastructure Investment
The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act was a significant win for the nation. By allocating $1.2 trillion for improving roads, bridges, and public transit, Biden prioritized long-term economic growth. From a conservative lens, maintaining and upgrading infrastructure supports commerce and the free market by improving transportation efficiency, reducing costs for businesses, and creating jobs. Stewardship of national resources is a deeply conservative value rooted in Proverbs 27:23: “Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.” - Support for Ukraine
Biden’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine demonstrated a commitment to national sovereignty and the defense of freedom. By rallying NATO allies and providing military aid, he upheld principles of liberty and accountability, weakening authoritarian aggression. Conservatives who value strong national defense and oppose unchecked global tyranny can find alignment here, even while urging caution about overspending. - Judicial Appointments
The Biden administration confirmed a record number of judges, many of whom are highly qualified. While we may differ on judicial philosophy, a functioning judiciary is essential for law and order—a cornerstone of conservative values. Fair and impartial courts ensure that the rule of law, not mob rule, prevails. - Economic Measures During COVID-19
The American Rescue Plan aimed to stabilize an economy battered by the pandemic. While its approach to spending sparked debate, the underlying goal—to provide relief to struggling families and businesses—aligns with Christian compassion and the conservative value of protecting livelihoods. At its best, this initiative reflects a balance of aid and recovery. - Religious Freedom
Though contentious, Biden’s tenure included moments of support for religious freedom. His personal faith was evident in certain decisions, such as advocating for international religious liberty and emphasizing the moral imperative of respecting diverse beliefs. While not without criticism, these efforts remind us that faith’s role in governance is powerful. - Farewell Address Warning
In his farewell address, Biden warned against the dangers of oligarchy and the erosion of democratic norms. This call to vigilance aligns with conservative principles of limited government and the protection of individual liberties. As Proverbs 29:2 states, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” - Withdrawal from Afghanistan
Ending America’s longest war was a commendable goal. Many conservatives agree that endless wars strain resources and moral clarity. While the execution was flawed (more on that later), the principle of focusing on national interests over foreign entanglements aligns with traditional conservative foreign policy.
The Bad
As Christians and conservatives, we’re called to hold leaders accountable when they stray from principles of truth, justice, and competence. President Biden’s tenure, like all presidencies, faced significant shortcomings.
- Handling of Religious Freedom
The administration’s push for the Equality Act raised alarms in faith communities. While equality is a noble goal, the Act risked undermining religious liberties by forcing faith-based organizations to act against their convictions. True equality respects the First Amendment and the rights of all to live according to their beliefs—a foundational conservative principle. - Withdrawal from Afghanistan
The decision to withdraw U.S. troops was justified, but its chaotic implementation was not. The rapid Taliban takeover, abandoned allies, and tragic loss of life revealed a failure in planning and execution. Conservatives value strong leadership and accountability in military affairs; this debacle undermined both, tarnishing America’s reputation on the global stage. - Economic Challenges
Under Biden, inflation surged to 40-year highs, straining family budgets. While some factors were global, critics rightly point to overspending and generous stimulus packages as contributing factors. Fiscal responsibility is a core conservative value, and failing to address inflation undermines the economic stability that hardworking Americans depend on. - Border Security Issues
Record-breaking illegal border crossings under Biden highlighted significant weaknesses in immigration policy. A secure border is not about xenophobia; it’s about protecting national sovereignty and ensuring orderly immigration. Policies that prioritize enforcement and streamline legal pathways are both compassionate and practical—values conservatives uphold. - Judicial Setbacks
The Biden administration faced significant legal challenges, including Supreme Court rulings against student loan forgiveness and certain environmental regulations. While conservatives may welcome these decisions, they underscore a broader issue: overreach in policymaking. A sound legal strategy respects constitutional limits and builds consensus rather than relying on executive action. - Age and Leadership Concerns
Biden’s age and perceived cognitive decline became unavoidable talking points. Stumbling speeches, awkward moments, and visible fatigue raised valid concerns about his capacity to govern. Leaders must inspire confidence, and when questions about mental fitness overshadow policy discussions, it undermines trust. This was particularly evident during the June 2024 debate, a moment that seemed to seal his decision not to run again.
A Call for Constructive Dialogue
As Proverbs 15:1 reminds us, “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” While it’s easy to let frustrations dominate our perspectives, it’s more fruitful to engage in honest, solutions-focused conversations. President Biden’s legacy, like any president’s, is a mix of achievements and missteps. Recognizing both reflects not only intellectual honesty but also a spirit of grace and humility.
Let’s commit to prayer for our leaders, regardless of party, as 1 Timothy 2:1-2 instructs: “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” Amen to that!
