The complex web of developments surrounding Ukraine, Russia, NATO, and U.S. foreign policy often feels like trying to untangle Christmas lights—just as one knot loosens, another seems to appear. As an independent Christian conservative, I find myself asking: Are we as a nation truly pursuing justice, promoting peace, and protecting liberty, or are we allowing ourselves to be ensnared by the chaos of geopolitics? It’s vital that our actions are rooted in principles that align with righteousness and truth.
Keith Kellogg’s Appointment: Experience Counts
President-elect Trump’s selection of Keith Kellogg as a special envoy to Russia and Ukraine is a hopeful sign in a time when experienced leadership is crucial. Kellogg’s extensive background in military strategy and international relations, including his role as a national security adviser to Vice President Pence, uniquely positions him to address one of the world’s most dangerous flashpoints. His appointment signals a pragmatic and informed approach that is sorely needed.
Kellogg is no stranger to the intricate challenges of diplomacy and conflict resolution. His ability to combine military expertise with a commitment to peace could make him an indispensable voice in crafting strategies that prioritize stability, sovereignty, and justice. Too often, smaller nations like Ukraine become pawns in global power struggles. Ukraine deserves better—it deserves a strategy that respects its sovereignty and its people’s right to live in peace, free from the shadow of aggression.
Proverbs 11:14 reminds us of the value of wise counsel: “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” Kellogg’s presence could be a vital piece of that counsel, helping to navigate a complex situation toward a resolution that avoids unnecessary escalation and prioritizes the dignity of all involved. In a world dominated by grandstanding and brinkmanship, Kellogg’s measured approach offers hope for a resolution that upholds justice and fosters peace.
NATO and Ukraine’s Draft: A Sobering Necessity
The Biden administration’s urging of Ukraine to lower its conscription age to 18, alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte’s call for increased military aid, underscores the grave stakes of Ukraine’s fight for survival. While the conscription of such young individuals has historical precedent, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has resisted this pressure, prioritizing the quality of his forces over the sheer size of their numbers. Zelenskyy has emphasized that adequately equipping and training soldiers is critical, stating, “We must not compensate the lack of equipment and training with the youth of soldiers.”
This approach reflects Ukraine’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty against an aggressor intent on erasing its independence. The bravery of its military personnel, regardless of age, continues to inspire admiration and support from the global community. At the same time, Zelenskyy’s resistance to conscripting 18-year-olds highlights his recognition of the moral and practical implications of such a decision.
Mark Rutte’s emphasis on NATO’s role is well-founded. Ukraine’s fight is not just a regional struggle but a defense of universal principles—sovereignty, self-determination, and freedom from tyranny. NATO’s support, through increased military aid and coordinated efforts, strengthens Ukraine’s ability to repel aggression and brings the world closer to a just and lasting peace.
As Christians, we value the sanctity of life, but Ecclesiastes 3:8 reminds us there is “a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.” Supporting Ukraine in its hour of need is both just and necessary, not only to save lives today but to prevent a future shaped by unchecked aggression. Let us pray that the sacrifices being made today will lead to a brighter, freer tomorrow for Ukraine and for the world.
Economic Strains and the Moral Imperative
On the Russian side, economic pressures are mounting. The ruble has plummeted, Western sanctions are cutting deep, and the nation’s fiscal stability is teetering. This highlights the effectiveness of economic tools as a countermeasure to military aggression, showing that wars can be fought on financial and strategic fronts as well as on battlefields.
At the same time, reports of Vladimir Putin’s concerns over Donald Trump’s potential return to the White House add a fascinating dimension. Trump’s direct, unconventional approach to diplomacy has led to successes where others have faltered, such as the Abraham Accords. His ability to bypass bureaucratic roadblocks could create an opening for negotiations that bring an end to this conflict.
However, any peace deal must be grounded in non-negotiable principles. Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and right to choose its alliances—including NATO membership—cannot be compromised. Concessions that reward aggression would embolden authoritarian regimes worldwide and destabilize the international order. The sacrifices made by Ukrainians in this war demand that any resolution honor their right to live free from oppression.
Zelensky’s Ceasefire Proposal: A Ray of Hope
Ukrainian President Zelensky’s willingness to consider a ceasefire, provided NATO offers security guarantees, is a practical and courageous step forward. It demonstrates his commitment to seeking peace without sacrificing Ukraine’s future. Security guarantees would serve as both a deterrent against future aggression and a safeguard for Ukraine’s sovereignty, affirming that borders cannot be redrawn by force.
For NATO, considering this proposal is not a sign of weakness but a reflection of strength and moral clarity. By extending robust, actionable guarantees, NATO can reinforce Ukraine’s defenses, save lives, and ensure that peace endures. However, these guarantees must be concrete, accompanied by resources, and part of a broader strategy to integrate Ukraine more deeply into the Western alliance.
The U.S. Role: Stewardship and Support
The United States has provided billions in military aid to Ukraine, a reflection of its moral and strategic responsibility to support a nation fighting for its survival. This aid is more than financial—it is an expression of America’s commitment to justice, liberty, and the defense of democratic principles.
However, this generosity must be coupled with accountability. Oversight mechanisms must ensure that aid strengthens Ukraine’s defenses effectively and avoids waste or misuse. Stewardship is not merely a bureaucratic concern; it is a moral duty. As Luke 16:10 teaches, “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much.”
Standing with Ukraine is not just about countering Russia—it is about sending a message to the world that aggression will not go unanswered. Supporting Ukraine is an investment in a stable, just international order and a reflection of America’s role as a defender of the oppressed.
A Christian Call to Action
As Christians, we are called to engage with the world and advocate for justice. The Bible calls us to “open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy” (Proverbs 31:9). Ukraine’s struggle against a more powerful aggressor exemplifies the need for this advocacy.
The recent meeting in Paris between Trump, Macron, and Zelensky, coinciding with the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, symbolizes the potential for renewal and restoration. Just as Notre Dame has risen from the ashes, Ukraine can emerge from this conflict stronger and freer, but only with the support of those committed to justice.
Let us pray for wisdom for our leaders, courage for the people of Ukraine, and strength for all who stand against tyranny. Peace is the goal, but justice must be its foundation. May we act boldly and faithfully, always seeking to honor God in the pursuit of a freer, more just world.
