Keith Caputo, the lead singer of Life of Agony, recently made waves by announcing his decision to de-transition, declaring, “I am a man. I always was a man.” This admission sheds light on the reality of gender dysphoria as a mental illness—one that deserves compassionate treatment and real solutions, not superficial fixes that cause more harm than good.

Gender dysphoria is a profound psychological struggle where a person feels disconnected from their biological sex. Rather than encouraging individuals to embrace this disconnect by mutilating their bodies, we should focus on addressing the root cause of their distress. Surgical mutilation and hormone treatments do not resolve the underlying mental health issues—in fact, they often exacerbate them, leaving individuals even more confused, isolated, and regretful.

Caputo’s story is a testament to this truth. He acknowledged that no amount of outward change could alter the fact that he was, and is, a man. This recognition points to the real solution: comprehensive mental health support to help those suffering from gender dysphoria align their perception with reality, rather than chasing a physical transformation that can never truly satisfy.

By affirming the truth about biology and providing therapy and care aimed at healing the mind, we can help those battling gender dysphoria find true peace and fulfillment. Encouraging delusions and facilitating bodily harm only deepens their suffering. Instead, society must prioritize a treatment path grounded in love, truth, and the restoration of mental health. This is not just a matter of policy; it’s a matter of compassion and responsibility.
