Last week, the Department of Justice (DOJ) under the Biden administration sued Virginia over its effort to maintain clean and lawful voter rolls, specifically targeting Governor Glenn Youngkin’s executive order that seeks to purge noncitizens from the state’s voter registration lists. At its heart, this legal battle shines a spotlight on a deeper, more troubling trend—Democrats’ apparent reluctance to safeguard election integrity and enforce commonsense voter protections.

Youngkin’s Executive Order: A Lawful Safeguard

Governor Youngkin, following a law passed in 2006 under Democratic Governor Tim Kaine, implemented a system to compare the list of registered voters with people who had identified as noncitizens at the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The order led to the removal of over 6,000 suspected noncitizens between January 2022 and July 2024, a policy that aims to ensure that only eligible voters—U.S. citizens—are casting ballots in Virginia elections.

Yet, the DOJ’s lawsuit paints this effort as problematic, citing isolated incidents in which some voters—like those in Prince William County—were wrongly removed, despite being citizens. But as the facts reveal, the system includes three layers of safeguards to protect against wrongful removals, including a 14-day notice period for the identified noncitizens, followed by a second notice after cancellation, and finally the provision of same-day voter registration if a mistake is discovered.

Despite these fail-safes, the DOJ still chose to intervene. This raises the question: why are Democrats so determined to undermine a bipartisan, legally sound process that is designed to prevent voter fraud?

DOJ Lawsuit: A Political Agenda?

The timing and rationale behind this lawsuit seem suspicious, especially considering the broader context of the Biden administration’s policies. Under President Biden and Vice President Harris, the country has witnessed a surge in illegal immigration and an apparent relaxation of border enforcement. It begs the question: is this lawsuit truly about protecting lawful citizens, or is it part of a larger agenda to blur the line between citizens and noncitizens in the electoral process?

Governor Youngkin’s executive order is not a partisan creation. It is the enforcement of a law passed under a Democratic governor—one who is currently running for reelection to the U.S. Senate. The fact that this law has been enforced by both Republican and Democratic administrations for nearly two decades undercuts any argument that it is radical or discriminatory. Yet, the DOJ, driven by ideological zealotry, has chosen to attack this bipartisan measure, seemingly as part of a broader effort to challenge any state-level attempts to ensure that only eligible citizens vote.

The Bigger Picture: Eroding Election Integrity

This legal battle is about more than Virginia’s voter rolls; it speaks to a national debate over election integrity and the future of American democracy. Every fraudulent vote cast by a noncitizen dilutes the vote of a legitimate citizen and undermines the fairness of elections. If we cannot agree that only citizens should vote, then what is the point of citizenship at all?

While Democrats have often dismissed concerns about voter fraud as unfounded, the American people remain wary. They see the Biden administration’s lax approach to the border, and now they see its DOJ targeting a state government that is trying to uphold basic standards of voter eligibility. These actions fuel the perception that Democrats are more interested in opening the door to noncitizen voting than in protecting the sanctity of the ballot box.

Conclusion: A Test for Virginia, and the Nation

Governor Youngkin’s defense of Virginia’s voter roll maintenance will resonate with Americans who believe that clean elections are fundamental to our republic. This lawsuit, coming in an election cycle where border security is already a glaring weakness for Democrats, will only reinforce the notion that the Biden administration is more concerned with advancing its political agenda than with upholding the rule of law.

Virginia’s fight is not just about one state—it’s a test case for the country. Will we protect the integrity of our elections, or will we allow partisan politics to weaken the very foundations of our democracy? The choice is clear: election integrity must be defended, for the sake of our nation’s future.
